There is a lot of agreement about the state of the Teton County Courthouse and according to county officials it’s a building in need of replacement.
After having toured the courthouse to see the problems first-hand, the Teton County Commission listened to an update Tuesday from architectural consultants hired to assess the 54-year-old building.
They told commissioners that the structure’s issues include seismic concerns, problems with accessibility, building code, and size.
Commission chairperson Natalia Macker said the replacement option is where the County is headed.
Circuit Court Judge Jim Radda noted that the with the Teton County Sheriff’s Office occupying the ground floor, the risks of a catastrophe are incredibly bad.
He suggested that the county find temporary locations for the offices and vacate the building.
Replacement of the facility could cost 60 million dollars.
Courthouse renovations were turned down by voters in a SPET tax vote in 2019.
Macker said the board will be considering the building replacement as part of their capital improvement program in October and November.
