The Jackson Hole High School Rotary Interact Club is stepping up to assist Riebeeck East Combined School (RECS) in the impoverished Eastern Cape of South Africa. On June 8, 2023, from 2–6 PM, local students will host a car wash at JHHS to raise funds.
Last year, the Rotary Interact Club began its work in South Africa by funding a math and science teacher’s salary at Ntsika Secondary School through a car wash event. The club has since partnered with AMANZI: Water to Schools, a local nonprofit that aims to provide sustainable water solutions for South African schools.
The upcoming car wash fundraiser will support RECS by financing the purchase of staff room furniture, addressing a pressing need for many underprivileged schools in the area.
Club President Isaac Larsen expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This car wash demonstrates the profound commitment of our students and community to effect positive change in the world.” Larsen, a member of the Interact Club since his freshman year, emphasizes that the event is entirely organized and operated by students.
The success of this fundraiser is owed to the support of the local community, with invaluable guidance provided by AMANZI founder Julia Heemstra, who has deep connections in South Africa. Heemstra, who grew up in South Africa and established a preschool in the Eastern Cape in 1991, believes that this project allows students to give back to their teachers by creating a better work environment at RECS.
