April first marked the kick off of the United States Census Bureau’s effort to count every single person living in the United States and five U.S. territories. For the first time since the United States started counting in 1790, participants can fill out a Census questionnaire online, by phone or mail. Most households in Teton County have received an invitation to respond to the Census, and a questionnaire will be sent shortly. However, due to the new online and phone options, households do not need wait for the questionnaire to arrive in order to complete the Census. The results of the 2020 Census will be used to determine the number of seats each state has in Congress and political representation on all levels of government. It also helps direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, housing, and public service. Responding to the Census is required by the Constitution and the Census Bureau is required by law to keep answers confidential so that answers cannot be used against someone by any agency or court. Anyone who has lived in Teton County for six months and one day should complete the 2020 Census. Households have until August 14, 2020 to complete the Census.
