Chronic Wasting Disease Detected in Elk Hunt Area 84 in Jackson Hole

December 24, 2024 by Jackson Hole Radio

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has recently confirmed a case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a cow elk within Elk Hunt Area 84, located in the Jackson region. The diseased elk was discovered by a member of the public on public land and was subsequently investigated by department personnel who took samples for testing.

This area, while not previously known for CWD in elk, is surrounded by deer hunting areas where the disease has been detected. Specifically, Deer Hunt Area 152, as well as Deer Hunt Areas 144, 154, and 155, have had past cases of CWD.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department actively informs hunters when CWD is detected in new areas to ensure they are aware of the risks. According to the Centers for Disease Control, it is advised not to consume meat from animals that appear ill or test positive for CWD.

Ongoing monitoring is crucial for understanding the spread and impact of CWD on local wildlife populations. The Game and Fish Department continues to study the disease’s effects and potential management strategies. They have tested over 5,000 samples from deer, elk, and moose in 2023, with most samples submitted by hunters.

For more detailed information on CWD testing, transmission, and regulations concerning the transportation and disposal of carcasses, visit the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s official website. There, you can also access a map showing areas where CWD is endemic.
