The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated that public water systems inventory their water service lines to check for potential lead materials. The Town of Jackson’s Public Works team has been working for the past three years to meet this requirement, determining the materials of water pipes in the town’s system. While no lead pipes or service lines have been found in the Town’s system, about 1,145 properties still have either unknown pipe materials or galvanized pipes that may have previously been connected to lead.
To address these properties, Public Works has sent two types of letters to affected property owners. These letters are not notifications of lead in the water but part of the EPA’s compliance requirements.
- Unknown Pipe Material: Most property owners receiving letters fall into this category. These residents are asked to fill out a survey (linked via QR code in the letter) and share pictures of their water pipes entering their water meters. If the material cannot be identified, Public Works will contact the property owner to verify the material.
- Galvanized Pipes: A smaller group of property owners with galvanized pipes, which could have been previously connected to lead, are encouraged to test their water and share the results with Public Works. Test kits are available at EPA’s Lead Test Kits website.
For residents who did not receive a letter, no action is required. The Town emphasizes that it is unlikely anyone in the community has concerning levels of lead in their water.
