Wyoming Game and Fish announced they hope to fit an additional 40 wolves in the region with radio collars in order to help them evaluate new packs and changing distributions. The study was begun in April of 2017of wolves outside of Yellowstone National Park and the Wind River Indian Reservation in conjunction with the resumption of their management of the carnivore. A large part of that management involves monitoring wolf numbers, distribution, survival and overall demographics of the population to enable them to make informed management decisions. Ideally, Game and Fish’s objective is to have at least one wolf collared in every known pack, but wolves can be difficult to find and capture. Recently, several wolves were captured by a helicopter capture crew in those areas where the Game and Fish Department is responsible. The captures were handled by a contracted professional wildlife capture crew who typically net-gun the animals, collect blood and other biological samples, fit it with a GPS collar and release it on-site. In the process, the practice seeks to help provide an accurate count for wolves in the trophy game management area.
