The Jackson Town Council will address cemetery policy updates during its regular meeting on March 17th, focusing on Aspen Hill Cemetery’s future. Public Works staff, led by Floren Poliseo and Cemetery Sexton Mike Halpin, will present current practices for plot purchases and burials, seeking council guidance on long-term planning. The agenda item, announced on March 14th, invites public comment to shape potential changes.
Aspen Hill Cemetery, a town service for over 100 years, faces capacity limits within three to four years, with only 2.5 usable acres left in its final 3.9-acre expansion area due to slopes and easements. Staff estimate that strategic planning could extend capacity by 18 to 25 years, or up to 30 years with a shift toward cremation. Recommendations include increasing the sexton’s hours and budget this fiscal year, exploring expansion options, tightening plot eligibility, updating Resolution 19-19 for accuracy, and proposing an ordinance to ban burials within town limits.
The review aims to improve record accuracy, currently hindered by limited sexton hours, and assess interment capacity amid rising private burials in Teton County. Fiscal requests include $18,000 for 450 additional sexton hours and $26,000 for a survey and plat, to be detailed further based on council direction.
