Jackson Hole Airport Director Jim Elwood this week explained the plans for runway reconstruction at the airport in 2022 during a joint meeting of the Jackson Town Council and Teton County Commission. That work he says will require the airport to be shut down for a little over two months during the spring.
Elwood said “We will be closing the runway the morning of April 11th. It is scheduled to reopen the morning of June 28th. That’s all in 2022 – that is a total of 78 days of construction where the runway will be closed.”
Elwood says measures are being taken to minimize disturbance to the area during construction, and to be environmentally responsible with the use of materials. He explains that about 90% of the materials from the current runway will be used in the construction of the new runway. That will also help limit the truck traffic during construction. Elwood stresses that the reconstruction will be in the current footprint of the runway and it will not be lengthened from what it is currently. Elwood says the project is totally funded by an FAA grant so that no local funds will be encumbered. The last time reconstruction of the runway has taken place was in the 1970s.
