The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission voted to shut down gray wolf hunting in Fish, Wildlife and Parks region 3 near Yellowstone National Park during their Friday meeting, and end wolf hunting in the rest of the state once six more wolves are killed there. The move came in response to mounting criticism over a record number of the animals shot or trapped after roaming out of the park this winter.
In total, 23 wolves from Yellowstone have been killed this winter after wandering from the park into Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Most were killed in Montana. Meanwhile, the commissioners rejected calls to revive quotas that would limit the number of wolves killed along Yellowstone’s northern border. Those quotas had been lifted last year after Republican lawmakers passed laws intended to reduce the wolf population. So far, 76 animals have been killed out of the 82 that were allotted for this year’s hunting limit in Montana.
