Mayor Pete Muldoon, who is running for election to a Jackson Town Council seat, has apparently filed a criminal complaint against the woman who accused him of first-degree sexual assault after recently telling the press he would not do so.
Earlier this month, Mayor Pete Muldoon held a press conference about the revelation of police reports regarding an incident where he was accused of sexual assault. Muldoon said that the allegations were false and that the accuser lied about them.
Muldoon said, however, he did not then and would not now, pursue legal action against the woman.
Now, as reported by the Jackson Hole Daily on Tuesday, Muldoon has gone back on that pledge by filing a complaint against the woman who made the accusations.
According to the news story, Muldoon filed a complaint with the Teton County Sheriff’s Office that said the accuser committed blackmail, bribery, and false reporting.
During the October 7th press conference, Muldoon told reporters that he did not pursue charges against the accuser because he didn’t want women to be dissuaded from filing reports and telling law enforcement about sexual assaults that have happened to them because they are worried that they might be charged with a crime for doing so.
“I don’t wish my accuser any ill will, I wish her the best,” Muldoon said at the time. “I hope she finds some peace somewhere; I am going to stick with taking the high road here.”
Muldoon also told the press that he stood by his statement that his accuser lied but that she believed it was true. He said, “I don’t believe the woman who accused me intended to harm me.”
Official reports from the investigation of the 2018 incident were released by Teton County after a public records request by a Teton County resident.
