LEAP Housing and Sustainable Trades + Housing Partners have announced the launch of an 8-home affordable housing community in Victor, Idaho, targeting income-qualified residents. This development is the first of its kind in the Teton region in recent years.
Application and Selection Process
The selection process for potential homeowners begins immediately. Interested applicants can apply through LEAP Housing’s website. Eligibility is based on income, ensuring that the homes benefit those who need them most.
Building Process and Involvement
The homes will be built through the USDA’s Mutual Self Help Program, where future homeowners contribute to the construction of their homes. This initiative allows homebuyers to receive below-market rate interest loans and earn credit for their sweat equity. Lindsey Love, a Teton Region native, will lead and train the homeowners throughout the building process.
Key Features of the Program
- Affordable Housing: Designed specifically for income-qualified residents to ensure access to quality homes.
- Group-Built Homes: Homeowners will actively participate in building their homes, fostering community and self-reliance.
- Sustainable Construction Certification: Participants will learn best practices in home construction, including topics like building science, material health, and high-performing systems.
- Straw Bale Construction: An environmentally friendly method providing excellent insulation, reducing energy costs and environmental impact.
Project Oversight and Goals
LEAP Housing will oversee the development, bringing their expertise to ensure high standards and affordability. Bart Cochran, CEO of LEAP Housing, emphasizes the project’s importance for Victor and the Teton region, highlighting the commitment to sustainable and community-driven housing solutions.
